I know my trip to NYC is a bit dated at this point, but I missed a restaurant worth sharing. Attached to the 50 Bowery Hotel where we stayed, you'll find Rice and Gold, a fusion restaurant taking the flavors of Asia and delivering them in a shiny new package.

Rice and Gold is the brain child of former Top Chef contestant Dale Talde and his partners. Colorful street-art cover the walls and fortune kitties and Japanese mechas/kaijus can be found throughout the bar and restaurant to give a funky modern vibe. As a huge fan of Japanese pop culture, I dig it.
Look at their menu and you'll find modern twists to traditional classics. Any avid "dim sum" go'er will be familiar with "har gow's" and "shumai's", but here you'll find lobster and scallop har gow's in squid ink and shrimp and bacon shumai's for appetizers. Crazy!

I appreciate the unconventional departure from the norm. Their menu is exciting and their food is flavorful and vibrant. If you're staying at the 50 Bowery, you have no excuse not to try Rice and Gold. If you're in the Chinatown area and looking for a change from the traditional, give it a go.

Candied Pork Buns - good but nothing crazy

Pork Sisig Noodles - warm, fatty, and delicious

Fried Brussel Sprouts with pomegranate nuoc mam, crushed peanuts and dill - fantastic!

Roasted Cauliflower with soy sesame and picked vegetables

Thai Fried Chicken with dirty rice, pickled chili, egg, and kaffir lime peanuts - at this point, as good as this was, we couldn't eat anymore

Rice and Gold has a very cozy vibe. Despite the fact that there are millions of restaurants in New York city, it was a good thing that the owner of Rice and Gold still decided to venture into food and service industry despite of the tight competition. Aside from the very cozy place, your dishes should be something! There must be a special food on your menu that couldn't be seen on other places that's why as the owner, you need to think outside the box! That's going to be a challenge, but satisfying once you overcome it!
