A year ago I had an opportunity to travel to Minneapolis for work. It was my first time there and we only had about a day and a half there. Before heading back to the airport on our last day, we were looking for somewhere to lunch, and as any sensible person would do, we pulled up Google to see what was nearby our current location. A few options popped up but the one that caught my eye was Tom Rup Thai in the Uptown area. I'm a big fan of Thai, so why not try it in Minneapolis. Now I'll admit that my expectations were low considering we're in the frigid north. I've eaten a lot of Thai in my day throughout many restaurants in Orlando, but to my surprise this was probably some of the best Thai I've ever had. Fast forward a year later, and work brings me to Minneapolis again and you better believe I'm going back to this place.
I ordered the Pad Thai the first time and I decided to order the same thing again just so I have a baseline for comparison to make sure they were consistent. We also ordered a number of appetizers to start including: jalapeno cheese wontons, summer rolls, spring rolls and a Tom Yum soup to share. Appetizers were great, the addition of jalapenos to a traditional cheese wonton made for a great added kick. Almost like a mini jalapeno popper. Summer rolls were fresh and the dipping sauce was fantastic. Spring rolls were crisp and light. The Tom Yum soup was very flavorful. The vibrant color of the soup matched the rich flavors of sour, citrus, and spice. All the flavors worked well together to give you that "brain tingling" level of spice that was just right.
Of all places to encounter great Thai food, I never thought it would be Minneapolis. So far, this takes top spot for me until I find something better, but of course, I still have to try Thai from the source. I do hope to travel to Thailand in the next few years so we'll see how Tom Rup holds up. Until then, if you're ever in the Minneapolis area and looking for some great Thai food, look no further.
